What Is Rotary?

Established in 1905, Rotary International (RI) is an association of more than 34,000 Rotary clubs worldwide in over 200 countries and geographical areas headquartered in Evanston, Illinois.

We are proud to be South Shore Rotarians

The South Shore Rotary club draws members from all corners of the borough. We call ourselves Rotarians and we stand proudly together with a global network of 1.2 million business and professional leaders, all volunteering their time and sharing their talents and expertise to improve the greater good in our communities and throughout the world. Organizationally Rotary International has a number of administrative levels due to its size, with the most important level being the local club level. Between Rotary International headquarters and the ‘clubs’, there are:

  • 34 administrative Zones splitting the world into smaller geographical levels.
  • Each zone is further broken down into Districts [there are a total of 529 Districts].
  • Each District has individual clubs, which individuals join.
  • On Staten Island there are five clubs. The clubs have an informal working relationship to facilitate implementation of our good works
  • South Shore Rotary [SSR], belongs to District #7230 which belongs to Zone #32.
  • The District has 43 clubs. Geographically it covers Bermuda [yes Bermuda], Westchester, the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island.
  • Zone 32 covers Bermuda, Canada, USA (CT, MA, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VT)

“SERVICE ABOVE SELF”

While we take the Rotary motto, SERVICE ABOVE SELF, very seriously we carry out our responsibilities through a series of enjoyable activities, e.g., golf outings, Octoberfest, comedy nights, shows, fishing trips, etc. to name a few [see the enclosed list of last year’s activities hosted by SSR]. South Shore Rotary also sponsors both Rotaract and Interact clubs in our area.
